HowTo Guide

Aircon Mould Prevention Checklist — Singapore HowTo

Aircon mould prevention isn't one big habit — it's three small ones layered over different timescales. This checklist organises them by frequency so you can actually do them. Start with the daily fan-only routine; that alone prevents 60% of cases.

Daily — fan-only mode for 10–15 minutes after cooling

When you turn off cooling, the evaporator fins are wet. Run fan-only mode for 10–15 minutes — the fan dries the fins before mould has time to colonise. Modern remotes have a 'Dry' or 'Fan' button; older units may need the mode dial. This single habit, done consistently, prevents most mould growth between services.

Weekly — wipe the front louvres + airflow check

Wipe the front cover and air louvres with a damp microfibre cloth. While the fan is running, hold a tissue 30 cm in front of the unit — strong steady airflow = healthy. Weak or pulsing airflow = filter blockage or blower issue; clean the filter and check again.

Monthly — wash the filters

Slide out the front filters, rinse under cool tap water, dry completely before reinstalling. Damp filters reinstalled = instant mould. Hold filters up to light; if you still see grey shadow they need more washing. Replace filters every 12 months.

Quarterly — book professional hygiene service

Every 3 months for daily-use units (bedrooms, living rooms). Every 6 months for occasional-use units (guest rooms). Our $90/unit non-toxic service handles the three sites you can't reach — drip pan, blower wheel, evaporator fins. See aircon mould servicing.

Environmental — keep room humidity below 65%

Even a perfectly maintained aircon will grow mould in a room running at 80% humidity overnight. Use the aircon in dehumidify mode for an hour before bed if room humidity is high. Open windows during cool dry hours (early morning) to refresh air.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should fan-only mode run after cooling?

10 minutes for short cooling sessions (under 1 hour), 15 minutes for longer sessions. Some premium models have an automatic 'dry-out' cycle that handles this for you — check your remote for a 'self-clean' or 'iClean' button.

Is monthly filter washing really necessary in Singapore?

Yes — Singapore's dust load is higher than most temperate climates, and humidity makes any dust trapped on the filter a mould substrate within weeks. Monthly washing is the floor, not the ceiling.

Does running the aircon at higher temperature reduce mould risk?

Slightly. Setting 24 °C instead of 22 °C reduces condensation rate by about 15%. Combined with the fan-only post-routine, this can extend service intervals from 3 to 4 months.
