Signs Your Exhaust Fan Needs Replacing (Before Mould Returns)

A failing exhaust fan rarely dies outright. It gets weaker month by month, until one day the ceiling shows that first dark spot. The good news: there are six early-warning signs you can check in 30 seconds. If you see three or more, replace the fan before you need mould removal — it's cheaper.

Sign 1 — Louder than last year

Bearing wear is the most common failure mode in Singapore's humidity. If the fan is noticeably louder than it was 12 months ago, the bearings are deteriorating. Time to failure: typically 6–12 months from first noise increase.

Sign 2 — Tissue test fails

Hold a square of toilet paper to the grille while the fan runs. A healthy fan holds the tissue firmly in place. If it sags or falls, extraction is weak. If the tissue barely sticks, the fan is doing nothing useful.

Sign 3 — Visible condensation 30+ min after shower

Healthy fan: ceiling dry within 20 minutes. Failing fan: condensation droplets visible 30–45 minutes after the shower. This is the prediction window — mould typically appears 6–12 weeks after this symptom starts.

Sign 4 — Musty smell that doesn't clear

The smell isn't the fan — it's mould biofilm already starting on the fan blades and inside the duct. Even after replacing the fan, the duct may need cleaning. A musty-smelling fan should be replaced within 2 weeks.

Sign 5 — Visible dust caking on the grille

Dust on the grille means air is moving slowly enough for particles to settle. The fan can't shed the dust load. Clean the grille; if it returns within a month, the fan is undersized or dying.

Sign 6 — The fan runs but ceiling mould keeps returning

If you've cleaned ceiling mould twice in 12 months and the fan 'works', the fan is functionally insufficient. Either undersized from day one, or aged into ineffectiveness. Either way, replacement is the cost-effective fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Singapore bathroom exhaust fan last?

5–7 years for budget fans, 8–12 years for KDK/Panasonic in normal conditions. Coastal HDBs (salt air) cut these by 30–40%. Continuous-run inline fans last longer in operating hours but the motor sees more total runtime — net similar lifespan.

Can I just clean the fan instead of replacing?

Cleaning recovers some airflow on a young fan with dust buildup. On a 5+ year old fan with bearing noise or motor weakness, cleaning gives only a few weeks of improvement. Cost-wise, replacement ($380) beats repeated cleaning + eventual mould removal.

Should I get the duct cleaned when replacing the fan?

Yes if you've had musty smells or visible mould. We include duct inspection in every fan replacement and add cleaning only if needed — usually +$60 for HDB, +$120 for condo with longer ducting.
